Man Suffers Eye Injury Following Botched iPhone Repair Job Print E-mail
Sunday, 01 November 2009

A Sussex man recently suffered a serious eye injury after attempting to repair his iPhone.

The unfortunate iPhone owner had recently dropped his nifty gadget, resulting in a shattered and unusable front screen. After searching the internet, he managed to find a website which provided details of easy methods for fixing iPhone screens - as it looked relatively simple he decided he would have a go at doing it himself.

"This was a big mistake" says Antony Ward of UK iPod repair specialist CheapestUKiPodRepairs.com. "iPods and iPhones are incredibly delicate. A five minute video on the internet isn’t going to tell you everything you need to know"

Regardless of the intricacy of the task and his own inexperience, the Sussex-based iPhone owner bought the spare parts and tools required and set about trying to prise the broken screen from his iPhone. Antony Ward takes up the tale: "At first it was ok; the two screws came out easy enough however the glass screen itself proved a tricky customer. After he’d been trying for about half an hour, the guy put down his tools and tried using a knife - this was the moment it all went wrong"

"The glass screen shattered, sending sharp fragments directly into his eyeball. Despite his immediate attempts to rinse his eye, it began to swell and soon he couldn’t see out of it at all"

After rushing to a local hospital, the unwitting would-be iPhone repairman was informed that the protective layer covering his eye had been pierced, and he would be required to wear an eye patch for several weeks. He received his treatment and returned home to see his iPhone still sitting on the table, still no closer to being repaired.

"If you’ve broken your iPod or iPhone, you should never try and fix it yourself - always turn to the professionals"
