DUBLIN, New Hampshire (October 24, 2007)—There may be no rivalry in the history of sports—at least in the Northeast—bigger than the one between the Yankees and the Red Sox. Therefore, it may be a surprise to learn that the homepage for Yankee’s Web site is showing support for the Red Sox in the World Series.
Hearing this, baseball fans may wonder whether Kevin Millar of the Baltimore Orioles has started a trend of endorsing other teams when it comes to the World Series—similar to presidential candidates’ withdrawing from an election and subsequently endorsing another candidate.
To clarify, the Web site is not owned by the Yankee baseball franchise, but rather belongs to Yankee Magazine, whose editor, Mel R. Allen, has been on staff for nearly 30 years—and is not to be confused with the late legendary Yankee sportscaster Mel Allen.
For people who are familiar with Yankee Magazine, it’s no surprise that the editors are big fans of the Sox. Yankee is “New England’s Magazine,” after all. Every day of the World Series YankeeMagazine.com will feature a story from our archives about the Red Sox and baseball, with a link to a podcast.
“Not only is the homepage showing our support for the Red Sox, but our office headquarters smell like Fenway Park today, for a staff lunch featuring Boston baked beans and Red Hots, to show support for our team,” said Mel R. Allen. “There’s no doubt that Yankee is part of Red Sox Nation.”
Allen, a baseball fan himself and author of a recent children’s book about the sport called A Coach’s Letter to His Son, is often confused with the late Yankee sportscaster Mel Allen. In fact, last spring, Yankee editor Mel Allen was booked on a radio show and realized as the interview started that the host was expecting the other Mel Allen.
Has Yankee Magazine considered changing its name to Red Sox Magazine? No, but there’s no doubt that the folks at Yankee love the Red Sox.
Robb and Beatrix Sagendorph introduced the first issue of Yankee Magazine to readers in September 1935 as “the expression, and perhaps indirectly, the preservation of our great New England culture.” Now a third-generation family-owned and -operated business, Yankee remains true to the vision of its founders—and still supports the Red Sox despite the magazine’s name.
