UNICEF Appeals for Immediate Assistance to Children Affected By Disasters in Asia Pacific |

UN children's agency UNICEF is appealing for immediate assistance to help meet the growing needs of children and families in south Asia and the Pacific affected by the recent spate of natural disasters that have devastated a number of countries in these regions. UNICEF has expressed great concern over the growing number of children and families affected by two earthquakes that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra in as many days. According to initial estimates, yesterday's earthquake has registered 7.6 on the Richter-scale and has killed upward of 500 people -- an estimate that is expected to rise. Tens of thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes and one-third of those affected are estimated to be children. |

Victoria Leading the Way for a Low-Carbon Future |

The South Australian state of Victoria has become the first in the world to effectively inventory the amount of carbon stored in its public forests, parks and reserves using a carbon accounting system proposed by the Australian government's cap-and-trade system. "This new information will help Victorian landowners to enter the carbon market, identify reforestation sites and measure carbon on their own land," said Victoria Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings. |

Catholic Charities USA Moves Disaster Response Team to American Samoa |

Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) announced today that it is deploying a disaster assessment and response team to American Samoa to assist its Catholic Social Services agency in Pago Pago and coordinate with FEMA and other agencies in providing relief and support services to the growing number of victims of the earthquake and tsunami devastation. "The preliminary reports and assessments that we have seen to date indicate a huge need for help with basic human services and provisions," said Rev. Larry Snyder, President and CEO of Catholic Charities USA. "Members of our Disaster Response Operations team are heading there to further determine the full scope of the need and to help in any way we can." |
